He was born in Mississippi. Some say he was born in 1912. His family lived in Tutwiler. He was the youngest of 11 children. His father was a sharecropper and a preacher.

Hooker learned to play music from others. His stepfather was a blues singer. A man named Tony Hollins also taught him. Hollins gave him his first guitar. Later, Hooker moved to Detroit. He worked in a steel mill. He also worked for the Ford Motor Company.

In Detroit, he used an electric guitar. This made his music much louder. He had a special boogie style. It had a strong rhythm. He often changed the speed of his songs. This helped the music fit the mood.

Many people loved his songs. "Boogie Chillen'" was a very big hit. He also sang "Boom Boom" and "Dimples." He won many Grammy awards. He is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He even has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
