He is remembered for his unique way of playing the music. He used a driving-rhythm boogie style that was very special. This style was different from the piano music popular in the 1930s. People often call him one of the greatest blues singers ever. He was even ranked 35th on a list of great guitarists. His music helped shape the sound of rock and roll.

Learning to play music was a journey for Hooker. His stepfather was a blues singer who introduced him to the guitar. A man named Tony Hollins also taught him how to play. Hollins even gave him his very first guitar. Hooker learned songs like "Crawlin' King Snake" from him. Later, Hooker moved to Detroit to find work. He worked in a steel mill and for the Ford Motor Company. In Detroit, he bought an electric guitar to make his music louder.

Hooker's life began in Mississippi, but his exact birth year is a mystery. Some records say 1917, but census data suggests 1912. He was the youngest of 11 children in a large family. His father was a sharecropper and a Baptist preacher. His mother was named Minnie Ramsey. The children were homeschooled and listened to religious songs. These spirituals were his first experience with music. He eventually ran away from home when he was 14 years old.

His music career took off with many famous songs and records. His song "Boogie Chillen'" was a huge hit in 1949. Other well-known songs include "Dimples" and "Boom Boom." Because he did not read or write, he was a very talented lyricist. He often changed the speed of his songs to fit the mood. Sometimes he even stomped on a wooden pallet to keep time. This made it hard for other musicians to play with him.

Over many years, Hooker worked with many different artists. He recorded with rock musicians like Van Morrison and Carlos Santana. He even appeared in the movie "The Blues Brothers." His talent earned him many big awards like Grammy wins. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1991. He also has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Hooker passed away in California in 2001.
