Chester Arthur Burnett was a famous blues singer. He used the name Howlin' Wolf. He had a very loud and rough voice. People said it sounded like a growl.

He grew up in Mississippi. He learned to play guitar from a man named Charley Patton. Patton taught him how to move with his instrument. He would throw the guitar over his shoulders. Burnett also played the harmonica.

He tried to sing in a high style called a blue yodel. He could not do it well. Instead, his voice sounded like a howl. He liked this new sound. It gave him his stage name.

He moved to Chicago to play blues. He was a great leader for his band. He always paid his musicians well and on time. He even helped them with their insurance.

His songs like "Smokestack Lightning" are very famous. He is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Many artists still try to sound like him today.
