He was born in Mississippi. His nickname came from playing in muddy water as a boy. He taught himself to play the harmonica. At age 17, he bought his first guitar. He sold a horse to pay for it.

In 1943, he moved to Chicago. He wanted to be a professional musician. In the city, he used an electric guitar. He needed the extra power so people could hear him in loud clubs. His music had a lot of pep. It was not just sad music.

He played with a great band. They recorded many classic songs. Some of these were "Hoochie Coochie Man" and "I'm Ready." He also had a famous rivalry with a singer named Howlin' Wolf.

In 1958, he traveled to England. His electric style was new to the people there. This helped start a big interest in blues in that country. His music helped shape rock and roll. Many famous rock bands were inspired by him.
