He has worked as a director, a producer, and a writer. His work has helped change how movies are made. He used computers to create worlds that look very real. Because of his movies, people all over the world have enjoyed watching animated characters. His films have earned more than 19 billion dollars at the theater. This makes him one of the most successful filmmakers ever. He has also won two Academy Awards for his creative work.

Lasseter learned how to make art by watching many cartoons. His mother was an art teacher, so he loved drawing. He even made small flipbooks to see his drawings move. Later, he went to a special school called CalArts. There, he studied character animation with many other talented students. He even worked at Disneyland as a ride operator. This job taught him how to use timing to make people laugh. These early steps helped him understand how to tell a good story.

When he started working at Disney, he had a big idea. He wanted to use computers to make animation look three-dimensional. Most animation back then was drawn by hand on flat surfaces. Lasseter thought computers could create backgrounds with much more depth. However, the leaders at Disney did not want to use this new technology. They decided to end his job at the studio in 1984. This was a very hard time for him.

He worked with computer scientists to make characters move on a screen. They made a short film called The Adventures of André & Wally B. to prove it could work. Lasseter directed many huge hits for Pixar, such as Toy Story in 1995. He also directed A Bug's Life and the Cars movies.
