He lived in Weymouth, Massachusetts, during the 1800s. Loud was an American inventor who changed how we think about writing. He is most famous for designing the very first ballpoint pen. This invention was a big step in the history of tools. Even though his pen was different, it started a new idea. Many people use pens like his every single day now.

Loud wanted to solve a specific problem.

At that time, most people used fountain pens. However, fountain pens could not write well on leather. Loud designed a tool that could mark rough surfaces. His pen used a small, rotating steel ball. This ball was held in place by a socket. As the ball turned, it helped the pen write on leather.

Loud was a very well-educated man. He graduated from Weymouth High School first. Later, he attended Harvard College. He graduated from Harvard in law in 1866. He even worked as a lawyer for a time. After that, he joined his father at the Union National Bank. He worked there as a cashier for many years. He stayed in that job until 1895.

History shows us that his pen was not a big success right away.

He obtained his patent for the pen on October 30, 1888. The patent number was US #392,046. Sadly, the pen was too coarse for writing letters. Because it was not easy to sell, the patent eventually lapsed. A different man named László Bíró patented the modern ballpoint pen in 1938. This was 22 years after Loud passed away in 1916.

Loud was a busy member of his community.
