He worked as a cashier at a bank. He also studied law at Harvard College. Loud loved to invent new things. In 1888, he made a special pen. This was the first ballpoint pen.

At that time, fountain pens were common. But fountain pens could not write on leather. Loud wanted a tool for rough surfaces. His pen used a tiny steel ball. The ball sat in a small socket. The ball could turn as you wrote. This helped the pen mark leather.

However, the pen was too coarse for letters. It did not work well for writing notes. Because of this, no one sold it in stores. His patent eventually lapsed. This means the legal right to his idea ended. Later, László Bíró made a modern ballpoint pen in 1938.

Loud also made other things. He made a toy cannon in 1887. He also made a firecracker cannon. He lived in Weymouth. He was a member of many local groups. He even wrote poetry and songs.
