Houseman grew up to work in the grain trade in London and Argentina. He eventually moved to the United States in 1925. After a stock market crash in 1929, his wife Zita Johann encouraged him to try a new career. He changed his name from Jacques Haussmann to John Houseman and began translating plays from German and French into English.

Houseman is famous for his work with a director named Orson Welles. They first worked together on a play called Panic in 1935. Even though that play only ran for three performances, it started a long partnership. They later formed a company called the Mercury Theatre in 1937. This group wanted to try new things and find new talent. They even made a radio show called The Mercury Theatre on the Air. This program became very famous after a 1938 broadcast of "The War of the Worlds" caused a big panic.
