His sister, Maria Schell, also became a famous actress. As a child, Schell actually wanted to be a painter or a musician instead of an actor. He even wrote his very first play when he was only ten years old. Later, he studied many subjects like philosophy and art history at different universities.

Schell's family had to move to Switzerland in 1938. They moved to Zürich to stay safe during a difficult time in history. After the Second World War ended, he decided to become an actor full-time. He started by acting in small parts in both old and new plays. He eventually moved to the United States to perform on Broadway. His first big movie role in Hollywood was in a film called *The Young Lions* in 1958. This was a major step in his long career.

He reached a huge milestone in 1961. He won an Academy Award, which is a very famous prize, for Best Actor.
