Because he excelled in so many different creative fields, the Deutsches Filminstitut described him as a "universal artist." He was particularly famous as one of the most celebrated German-speaking actors of his generation. His talents allowed him to move seamlessly between the stage and the movie screen. He also found success as a conductor and a pianist.

Schell's early life was deeply connected to the world of performance. He was born in Vienna, Austria, to parents who were both creators. His mother, Margarethe, ran an acting school. His father, Hermann, was a Swiss poet, novelist, and playwright.

Even his siblings, such as his elder sister Maria Schell, became professional actors. Although he grew up surrounded by theatre, Schell did not always want to act. As a child, he hoped to become a painter, a musician, or a playwright. He showed early creative skill by writing his first play at age ten.

His childhood was interrupted by major historical shifts. In 1938, his family fled Vienna for Zürich, Switzerland. They left to escape the Anschluss, which was when Nazi Germany annexed Austria.

After the Second World War, Schell began his professional journey. He studied philosophy and art history at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München. He also spent time at the University of Zurich and the University of Basel. During his university years, he was active in sports like football and rowing. He also worked as a part-time journalist to earn money.

Schell's acting career grew through both stage and film. He began acting professionally at the Basel Theatre. His film debut was in the 1955 German anti-war film *Kinder, Mütter und ein General*. In this movie, he played an officer-deserter. This role established a "trademark" for his acting style. He often portrayed characters who were disillusioned or sensitive to the chaos of war. He eventually moved to the United States to perform in the Broadway play *Interlock* in 1958. This was followed by his Hollywood debut in *The Young Lions*.

One of the most significant moments in his career came in 1961. Schell won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his role in *Judgment at Nuremberg*.

He played a defense attorney in this legal drama. To prepare for this complex role, he read the entire forty-volume record of the Nuremberg trials. His performance was described as "electrifying" by critics. He was the first German-speaking actor to win this Academy Award since the end of World War II. This achievement brought him great professional pride and international recognition.

Beyond acting, Schell was a significant filmmaker and musician. He made his directorial debut with the romantic drama *First Love* in 1970. This film earned a nomination for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. He also directed and produced several other projects, including *The Pedestrian* and *Tales from the Vienna Woods*.

He also appeared in many television productions, earning a Golden Globe for his work in the miniseries *Stalin*.
