His professional career spanned seven remarkable decades. He achieved success across three major mediums: film, stage, and television. Plummer is uniquely celebrated for his versatility and technical skill. He was the only Canadian recipient of the "Triple Crown of Acting." This prestigious distinction means he won top honors in all three fields. His accolades include an Academy Award, two Tony Awards, and two Primetime Emmy Awards. He also earned a BAFTA Award and a Golden Globe.

Plummer's journey began with a focus on music. Born on December 13, 1929, in Toronto, Ontario, he was an only child. His father, John Orme Plummer, sold stocks and securities. His mother, Isabella Mary Abbott, worked as a secretary at McGill University. As a young schoolboy, Plummer studied to become a concert pianist. However, he soon discovered a deep passion for the theater. He began acting while attending the High School of Montreal. This shift was inspired by watching Laurence Olivier in the 1944 film Henry V.

He developed his foundational skills through practical apprenticeship. Plummer served as an apprentice with the Montreal Repertory Theatre. Interestingly, he worked there alongside fellow actor William Shatner. In 1946, a theater critic named Herbert Whittaker noticed his talent. Whittaker saw Plummer perform as Mr. Darcy in a high school production. This led to Plummer being cast at age 18 in Jean Cocteau's La Machine infernale. His professional debut occurred in September 1948 with Ottawa's Stage Society. He performed in a new production every two weeks, gaining intense experience.

Plummer's career moved through several distinct geographic stages. He performed in Canada and the United States before working in Bermuda. In 1952, he starred in productions at the Bermudiana Theatre in Hamilton. An American producer recruited him there, leading to Broadway opportunities. He made his Broadway debut in January 1953 in The Starcross Story. Although that specific production closed on opening night, Plummer continued to build his reputation. He appeared in several notable plays, including The Lark and The Dark Is Light Enough. He even served as an understudy for the legend Tyrone Power.

His work in classical theater was both extensive and varied. Plummer performed with the Royal Shakespeare Company in England. He played major roles such as Richard III and King Henry II. In 1956, he debuted at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival. There, he played the title role in Henry V, a role he later repeated in 1981. His stage repertoire included complex characters like Hamlet, Macbeth, and Othello. These performances required immense discipline and emotional range.

In this musical epic, he played Captain Georg von Trapp alongside Julie Andrews. The film was a massive commercial success. It became the all-time top-grossing film, surpassing Gone with the Wind. While Plummer initially found the role sentimental, he respected the film's high quality. He later won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in 2011 for the film Beginners.

His filmography includes a vast array of genres and characters. He appeared in historical epics like The Fall of the Roman Empire and Waterloo. He also worked in science fiction in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. His roles spanned from the drama of A Beautiful Mind to the mystery of Knives Out.
