He was a German publisher from the 1600s. He is famous for creating the first newspaper. This paper was called the Relation aller Fürnemmen und gedenckwürdigen Historien. It helped people learn about important events. Many groups now recognize his work as the start of news.

His work happened through a special way of sharing news. He used a system of regular updates to keep people informed. A newspaper needs to be public and happen at set times. It must also share news that is current and new. This helped readers keep up with things happening far away. His paper was a series of news shared at regular intervals. This made it different from a single book.

Carolus had many jobs that helped him succeed. He was born in 1575 in Muhlbach-sur-Munster. His father was a priest. First, he learned to be a bookbinder. Later, he worked as a bookseller and a printshop owner. He also worked as a scribe, which is a person who writes things down.

Being a scribe helped him build great connections. He knew many postmen and traders. These people traveled and could bring him new stories. Because of these friends, he started his paper in 1605. He lived and worked in the city of Strasbourg. This city was part of the Holy Roman Empire. He lived there until he died in 1634.

Some people still debate what exactly his paper was. An English historian named Stanley Morison had a different view. He thought the Relation was actually a newsbook. He said it looked too much like a book. It was printed in a large quarto size. It also used only one wide column of text. However, the World Association of Newspapers still calls it the first newspaper.
