She lived from 1672 until 1706. She worked with books and news. Her work helped change how people read. She was a leader in a busy trade. Many people know her for her newspapers. She was a very talented business person.

Mallet worked in a family business.

In 1672, she married David Mallet. They sold printed speeches from Tyburn. These were speeches given by prisoners before they died. After David died in 1683, their son David tried to help. He was an apprentice in the printing trade. However, the son did not succeed in the business. Elizabeth soon took charge of the presses again.

She launched a new paper called The Daily Courant.

This happened on March 11, 1702. It was the first daily newspaper in England. The paper was just one single sheet. It carried news summaries from foreign papers. She did not print news from London. This helped her avoid trouble with the government. She wanted to stay safe from reprisals.

Mallet used a clever way to write.

She wrote under a name for a man. She did not give her own opinions. She only shared the facts of a story. She wanted readers to use their own sense. She believed people could make their own reflections. This was a very new way to share news. It was a very honest way to work.

Some people call her the first editor in Britain.

The job of an editor did not exist yet. Historians like Charles Sommerville study her work. They say she changed how people saw time. Frequent news made life feel much faster. It moved ideas away from divine planning. Instead, people began to see an unknowable future. Her work helped shape the modern world.
