Joel Scott Osteen is a prominent American pastor, televangelist, and author.

He is based in Houston, Texas, where he leads Lakewood Church. Osteen is a major figure in the Word of Faith movement. He is also closely associated with prosperity theology. This belief system suggests that material wealth is a reward from God for being a faithful Christian. Through his weekly televised services and many best-selling books, he has reached a massive global audience.

Osteen's career began by supporting his father, John Osteen. John founded Lakewood Church in an old feed store.

Joel studied radio and television communications at Oral Roberts University in Oklahoma. He returned to Houston in 1982 to manage the church's television program. He became an ordained minister in 1983. Following his father's death from a heart attack in January 1999, Joel preached his first sermon. By October 3, 1999, he became the senior pastor of Lakewood Church.

The preaching style of Joel Osteen is very specific. He prefers to focus on the goodness of God and living an obedient life. He emphasizes the power of love and maintaining a positive attitude. He often avoids detailed discussions regarding sin, the devil, or hell. Instead, he aims to teach Biblical principles in a simple, accessible way. To prepare, he memorizes his remarks and listens to recordings of his previous sermons to improve his delivery.

Lakewood Church has grown significantly under his leadership. In 2003, the church acquired the Compaq Center. This building was formerly the home of the NBA's Houston Rockets and the AHL's Houston Aeros.

The church renovated this massive facility, which has a seating capacity of 16,000. The church operates with an annual budget of $70 million. While the church collects $43 million a year in donations, Osteen states he draws no salary from the church. He relies on income from his many book sales to support his life.

Osteen has hosted various large-scale events throughout his career. Since 2004, he and his wife, Victoria, have hosted "Night of Hope" events. These include the annual "America's Night of Hope" held in the U.S. and internationally. These events combine inspirational messages with contemporary Christian music. In 2018, he collaborated with rapper Kanye West for a "Sunday Service" event at Lakewood. This event drew 17,000 attendees and many more online viewers.

His ministry has faced several notable controversies. Some theologians, such as Michael Horton, have criticized his message as heresy. They argue that prosperity theology makes religion about the individual rather than about God. In 2017, Osteen faced criticism during Hurricane Harvey. Many questioned why the 606,000-square-foot church did not immediately serve as an emergency shelter. The church stated that flooding made the building inaccessible initially.

The church eventually opened as a shelter on August 29, 2017. Later, the City of Houston honored Osteen for his role in rebuilding efforts.

In February 2024, a serious incident occurred at the church. A woman entered the facility between services and began firing an AR-15 rifle.

Two off-duty police officers working security returned fire and killed the shooter. During the exchange, the woman's seven-year-old son was critically injured by a gunshot to the head. Another man was also wounded during the event. This event highlighted the security challenges faced by large public gatherings.

Osteen's influence extends into the world of literature and media. He has authored numerous books, including "Your Best Life Now" and "Become a Better You." His work often focuses on personal potential and maintaining a victorious mindset. He has also appeared in various documentaries and even provided a voice for a character in the film "The Star." His life and work continue to be a subject of significant interest in both religious and social studies.
