Pine forests nearby provide wood for the kilns. These kilns are very hot ovens used to bake the clay. Rivers help move the fragile pieces to other places.

The history of this place goes back over 2,000 years. Long ago, the area belonged to the Chu State. Later, it was part of the Qin and Han dynasties. The town was once called Changnan because of the Chang river. In the year 1004, it was named Jingdezhen. This name came from Emperor Zhenzong of the Song dynasty. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, it was a very important center for trade.

It was later named a top national historical city in 1982. Today, the city has over 1.6 million people.
