Japanese Alps

geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Japanese Alps are a series of huge mountain ranges. They sit in the middle of Honshu, the main island of Japan. These mountains are divided into three main groups. They are the Hida, Kiso, and Akaishi mountains. These peaks are very high. Some are even taller than many other mountains in the country. In fact, they are the tallest peaks after Mount Fuji.

For a long time, people have used these mountains for many things. Local people gathered wood, fuel, and medicine from the slopes. They also found minerals and used plants for fertilizer. Buddhist monks and Shugenja used the mountains for prayer and practice. Many people went on pilgrimages to visit sacred spots. One famous place is the peak of Mount Tate. Even long ago, people climbed Mount Tsurugi. They left behind metal tools from over 1,000 years ago.

An English archaeologist named William Gowland first used the name "Japanese Alps." He thought the land looked like the European Alps. He was the first foreigner to climb Mount Yari and Mount Norikura. Later, a missionary named Walter Weston helped make the name popular. He traveled the ranges using notes from Gowland. Weston also met local guides like Kamijō Kamonji. You can see a memorial plaque for Weston at Kamikōchi.

Exploring these mountains has changed over time. In the 1600s, samurai officers made maps of the ridges and valleys. They worked with local hunters and farmers. In the winter, the Hida mountains get very heavy snow. This makes them very hard to cross. In 1907, people finally climbed Mount Tsurugi. Later, in the 1960s and 1970s, travel became much easier. New ways to move, like the Komagatake Ropeway, were built. This helped more tourists visit the beautiful views.

Today, the Japanese Alps are a place of wonder and science. The Hida mountains are in Nagano, Toyama, and Gifu. The Kiso mountains sit in Nagano. The Akaishi mountains span Nagano, Yamanashi, and Shizuoka. Scientists also found something amazing here recently. They found that the mountains have active glaciers. These are huge masses of ice. As of 2019, there are seven active glaciers in all of Japan. All seven of them are found in these mountains.
