James Thomas Sutherland was a foundational figure in the development of ice hockey.

Often called the "Father of Hockey," he influenced the sport as a player, coach, referee, and administrator. His leadership helped spread hockey's popularity from Canada into the United States. He held high-ranking positions in major organizations, including the Ontario Hockey Association (OHA) and the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association (CAHA). Sutherland was deeply committed to preserving the history of the game and formalizing its rules.

Sutherland’s influence on the mechanics of the game was significant. He worked to modernize how hockey was played and organized. In 1911, while serving on the OHA executive, he passed a rule change regarding player positions. This change renamed the "point" and "cover-point" roles to right and left defence. He also helped implement the shift from two thirty-minute periods to three twenty-minute periods. Furthermore, he was credited with introducing rules that allowed for player substitutions. These changes helped create a more structured and modern version of the sport.

His early life in Kingston, Ontario, provided the setting for his passion for hockey. Born on October 10, 1870, he was the youngest of eight children. His family ran a custom shoemaking business that produced boots for troops at Fort Henry. Sutherland grew up playing on the frozen Cataraqui River. He witnessed an early recorded hockey game in 1886 between Queen's University and the Royal Military College of Canada. By the winter of 1890–91, he was playing as a defenceman for the Athletic Club of Kingston during the inaugural OHA season.

Sutherland’s life was also defined by his military service during World War I.

He enlisted in 1916 with the Canadian Army Service Corps and later served as a captain in the 146th Battalion. While serving overseas in the Canadian Expeditionary Force, he also acted as a quartermaster for the Casualty Training Battalion. During the war, he used his position in the CAHA to encourage hockey players to join the military effort. He famously compared the teamwork found in hockey to the teamwork needed in war.

After the war, Sutherland sought ways to honor those who had fallen in combat.

He was inspired by the deaths of two former Frontenac players, Scotty Davidson and George Richardson. To remember these soldiers, he helped create the Memorial Cup in 1919. Originally known as the OHA Memorial Cup, it was designed to honor soldiers who died during the war. Today, this trophy is still awarded annually to the best junior hockey team in Canada.

Sutherland spent much of his later life campaigning for the historical recognition of Kingston. He argued that Kingston was the true birthplace of hockey, citing a reported game from Christmas Day, 1855.

In 1943, a CAHA committee led by Sutherland concluded that Kingston and Halifax had equal claims to the title. Although later research suggested that Montreal and other cities played major roles in the game's early development, Sutherland's efforts were vital. His work helped spark the movement to create a permanent home for hockey history.

This movement eventually led to the establishment of the Hockey Hall of Fame. Sutherland organized a local committee, raised funds, and convinced the NHL and CAHA to provide financial support. He even donated $1,000 of his own money to the cause. While the Hall of Fame eventually moved to Toronto due to disagreements and costs, Sutherland's vision succeeded. He was one of the original inductees into the Hall of Fame. His life's work ensured that the pioneers of the sport would never be forgotten.
