He is best known as the founder of Focus on the Family (FotF). He led this organization from 1977 until 2010. During the 1980s, he became a major spokesman for conservative social positions. Many observers viewed him as a central leader in American public life. He was often compared to other influential evangelical leaders like Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson. His work focused on applying religious principles to family life and social policy.

Dobson's influence operated through a massive multimedia network. He produced the daily radio program Focus on the Family. This program was broadcast in more than a dozen different languages. It reached over 7,000 stations across the entire world. Reports indicate that more than 220 million people heard his message daily. These listeners were spread across 164 different countries. Additionally, about 60 television stations in the United States carried his programming. This network allowed his ideas to reach a global audience very quickly.

His core belief system centered on what he called "family values." Dobson believed that the Bible mandated traditional gender roles. He taught that children should be instructed in heterosexuality. He viewed heterosexual marriage as a vital cornerstone of civilization. Because of this, he worked to protect marriage from what he perceived as threats. He identified feminism and the LGBTQ rights movement as dangers to this structure. He described the struggle over these social issues as a "Civil War of Values."

Dobson's professional career began in the field of academic psychology. He earned his doctorate from the University of Southern California in 1967. He served as an Associate Clinical Professor of Pediatrics there for 14 years. During the 1960s, he observed the rise of the counterculture movement. He felt that the rejection of authority during the Vietnam War era was problematic. He believed this period showed a disintegration of moral and ethical principles. This observation led him to write his 1970 book, *Dare to Discipline*. In it, he encouraged parents to use corporal punishment to maintain authority.

He expanded his influence by founding several specific organizations. In 1981, he helped found the Family Research Council. This group acted as a federal lobbying organization. In 2004, he established the Family Policy Alliance. This served as a lobbying arm for his media empire. He also created the Dr. James Dobson Family Institute in 2010. These groups worked together to advocate for socially conservative policies. They sought to influence laws regarding abortion and LGBTQ rights at both state and federal levels.

Dobson's work often involved high-profile and controversial moments. In 1989, he conducted an on-camera interview with the serial killer Ted Bundy. This interview took place the day before Bundy's execution. The recording became a significant source of revenue for Focus on the Family. The organization received over $1 million from the tapes. They used $600,000 of that money to support anti-pornography and anti-abortion groups. This event demonstrated how his media reach could intersect with intense public interest.

His legacy is defined by his massive scale and political impact. By 1995, the annual budget for Focus on the Family exceeded $100 million. He successfully mobilized his followers to influence government actions. For example, his listeners wrote 80,000 letters to the White House in 1979. This helped him secure an invitation to a conference on families. His efforts contributed to the defense of marriage amendments in thirty U.S. state constitutions. He remained a dedicated advocate for his views until his death on August 21, 2025.
