He was a psychologist and a writer. He was also a major leader for evangelical Christians. He was born on April 21, 1936, in Shreveport, Louisiana. His family had many ministers in the Church of the Nazarene. Religion was a huge part of his life from the start. He said he learned to pray before he could talk. He gave his life to Jesus when he was only three years old.

Dobson spent many years studying how the mind works. He went to Pasadena College and later the University of Southern California. He earned his doctorate in psychology in 1967. For 14 years, he worked as a professor at the USC School of Medicine. He also worked at Children's Hospital Los Angeles for 17 years. During the 1960s, he saw many changes in how people acted. He felt that society was losing its moral rules. This led him to write a book called Dare to Discipline in 1970.

In 1977, he started a large group called Focus on the Family. This group grew into a massive media empire. It had many magazines, videos, and even basketball camps. His radio programs were heard in over 164 countries. More than 220 million people heard his shows every day. The shows were broadcast on over 7,000 stations worldwide.

By 1995, the group's budget was more than $100 million each year. He also started a radio show called Family Talk in 2010.

Dobson had very specific ideas about what a family should look like. He believed in traditional gender roles for men and women. He thought these roles were required by the Bible. He wanted to protect marriage between a man and a woman. Because of this, he fought against LGBTQ rights and feminism. He also worked to stop legal abortion. He started many groups to help change laws in the United States. These included the Family Research Council in 1981 and the Family Policy Alliance in 2004.

His work often brought him into the middle of big debates. He once interviewed the criminal Ted Bundy the day before his execution. This interview became very famous and helped raise money for his groups. He also spoke out against government programs like PEPFAR. He believed some of the money used for these programs was spent on immoral things. Even after he stepped down from Focus on the Family, he kept sharing his views. He remained a strong voice for conservative social positions. He passed away on August 21, 2025.
