He became one of the most influential Christian leaders of the 20th century. His work focused on sharing the Christian message through massive public gatherings and media broadcasts. These events allowed him to reach a global audience across several decades. Graham's career spanned over sixty years of full-time religious service. He helped many people connect the teachings of the Bible to the modern world.

Graham's ministry relied on a specific method of large-scale evangelism. He hosted annual "crusades," which were live religious campaigns held in massive venues.

These crusades often took place in large stadiums or outdoor arenas. To expand his reach, he utilized radio and television technologies. He hosted the radio program "Hour of Decision" from 1950 to 1954. This program reached approximately 20 million homes during the 1950s. By combining live preaching with mass media, he created a powerful way to communicate his message.

To maintain his reputation, Graham established a strict code of ethics. In 1948, his team created the "Modesto Manifesto" in a California hotel room. This document served as a guide for his life and professional work. It was designed to protect him from accusations of financial, sexual, or power abuse. The manifesto included rules for collecting money in churches. It also required using official crowd estimates for outdoor events. One famous part was the "Billy Graham rule," which meant he would never be alone with a woman other than his wife.

Graham's life began on a dairy farm near Charlotte, North Carolina.

He was born on November 7, 1918, to Morrow and William Franklin Graham Sr. As a child, he enjoyed reading adventure novels and practicing the Tarzan yell. He experienced a religious conversion at age 16 during meetings led by Mordecai Ham. Graham pursued higher education at Bob Jones College and the Florida Bible Institute. He later graduated from Wheaton College in 1943 with a degree in anthropology. During his studies, he committed to viewing the Bible as the infallible word of God.

His religious impact was massive in terms of scale and numbers.

According to his website, Graham spoke to at least 210 million people in person. He traveled to more than 185 different countries and territories. His total audience through radio and television likely surpassed billions of people. Some reports suggest he preached to 215 million people in person and reached 2 billion through telecasts. This level of reach was unprecedented in the history of Christianity.

Graham also played a significant role in American social and political life. He was a civil rights advocate who spoke out against racial segregation. As early as 1953, he insisted that his revivals and crusades be racially integrated. In 1957, he invited Martin Luther King Jr. to preach at a revival in New York City.

He maintained close relationships with several U.S. presidents. He was a friend to Dwight D. Eisenhower, Richard Nixon, and Lyndon B. Johnson. His presence often brought a sense of prestige to civic events and political gatherings.

Throughout his long life, Graham worked to bridge different religious groups. While many evangelicals of his time were suspicious of Catholicism, Graham developed friendly ties with Catholic leaders. He encouraged unity between Catholics and Protestants. He also encouraged people who joined his movement to remain within their original mainline Protestant churches. This helped him connect with many different types of Christian denominations. He lived to be 99 years old, leaving a legacy that shaped the religious landscape of the 20th century.
