He was a major figure in the evangelical movement. He used media to spread his religious and political views. Falwell founded several large organizations that lasted for many years. His work spanned religious leadership, education, and political lobbying. He was also a well-known televangelist. This means he used television to conduct his religious ministry.

Falwell's career involved building many different institutions. In 1956, he founded Thomas Road Baptist Church in Lynchburg, Virginia. The church began with only 35 members. Over time, it grew into a megachurch.

In 1967, he established Lynchburg Christian Academy. This school was originally founded as a segregation academy. In 1971, he co-founded Liberty University with Elmer L. Towns. This university grew to offer over 350 accredited programs. Today, it serves approximately 16,000 on-campus students and 100,000 online students.

His personal life was closely tied to his public work. He was born on August 11, 1933, in Lynchburg, Virginia. He had a twin brother named Gene. Falwell married Macel Pate on April 12, 1958.

They remained married for nearly 50 years until his death. They had three children: Jerry Jr., Jonathan, and Jeannie. His son Jonathan eventually succeeded him as senior pastor. Falwell graduated from Baptist Bible College in 1956. He later received three honorary doctorates. These included a Doctor of Divinity and a Doctor of Laws from Seoul, South Korea.

Falwell was a powerful force in American politics. In 1979, he co-founded the Moral Majority. This group became a large political lobby for evangelical Christians. The organization promoted values like being "pro-life" and "pro-traditional family." It was credited with helping Ronald Reagan win the 1980 presidential election.

His political and social views were often controversial. In the 1960s, he campaigned against civil rights leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. He also spoke against racial desegregation in public schools. However, his views on civil rights evolved later in life. In 2005, he stated that civil rights were an American value for everyone. He argued that LGBT people should have equal access to housing and jobs. He believed these were basic rights rather than "special rights."

Falwell also had a complex relationship with other religious leaders. In 1987, he briefly led the PTL ministry. He took over after Jim Bakker resigned following a scandal.

During this time, Falwell raised $20 million to help the ministry. He even fulfilled a promise to ride a water slide at Heritage USA. However, he could not stop the ministry from going bankrupt. He resigned from PTL in October 1987. Some leaders, like Billy Graham, offered him respect despite their disagreements. Graham called him a "man of God" at the time of Falwell's death.

His influence reached into many different areas of society. He held strong views on the Vietnam War and the role of the president. He also advocated for school voucher systems in public education. Falwell expressed strong support for Israel, a stance known as "Christian Zionism." He also held specific views on South African apartheid. These diverse interests made him a central figure in the intersection of faith and politics. He died on May 15, 2007.
