He was born in Derby in 1858. His father, William Hobson, owned a successful newspaper. John grew up with his brother, Ernest William Hobson, who was a mathematician. He later moved to London in 1887. At that time, England was facing a hard economic period. This move helped him meet many different thinkers. He learned about many new ways to look at money and society.

One of his first big ideas was called underconsumption. He wrote about this in a book called Physiology of Industry in 1889. He worked on this idea with his friend Albert F. Mummery. Mummery was a businessman and a mountain climber. The theory argued against the common ideas of that time. It suggested that people needed more money to buy goods. If people do not buy enough, it can cause problems for jobs. This idea was very different from what other experts believed. It actually caused many professional economists to dislike his work.

Later, Hobson became famous for his writing on imperialism. Imperialism is when a strong country takes control of other lands. He worked as a reporter in South Africa during the Second Boer War. While there, he saw how mine owners might influence leaders. He believed these owners wanted to make more profit from mining. In 1902, he published his most important book titled Imperialism. He argued that countries expand to find new places to invest money. This book made him well-known all over the world.

Many famous people studied Hobson's work. The thinker Vladimir Lenin used his ideas in his own books. Other leaders like Leon Trotsky also read his work. His ideas even helped people like Hannah Arendt later on. He wrote many books, such as The Industrial System in 1909. He suggested that taxes could help fix unfair money gaps. He also wanted to stop monopolies from having too much power. He hoped these changes would help stop people from being unemployed.

Even though his ideas were important, Hobson held very unfair views. He wrote many unkind things about Jewish people. He used mean words to describe Jewish financiers in his books. He also spoke against Jewish immigration in the 1890s. These views were wrong and are a sad part of his history. He also had some views about other cultures that were not kind. Despite this, his work changed how people thought about global power. He died in 1940 after a long life of writing and thinking.
