While many people use the term to describe the schools themselves, it is also an official athletic conference. The group competes in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I. In certain sports, like football, they compete in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). The league is globally renowned for academic excellence and highly selective admissions.

These universities operate using massive financial resources known as endowments. An endowment is a large sum of money set aside to support a school's mission. These funds allow the universities to provide abundant resources for research and student aid. The size of these endowments varies significantly between the different members. Brown University has an endowment of about $6.9 billion. In contrast, Harvard University holds $53.2 billion. This is the largest financial endowment of any academic institution in the entire world.

Harvard is the oldest, having been founded in 1636. Yale followed in 1701, and Princeton was founded in 1746. Columbia University was established in 1754. The University of Pennsylvania has a complex history regarding its founding date. While it considers 1755 as the start of undergraduate education, it claims 1740 as its founding year. This date is based on a trust for a charity school. Brown University was founded in 1764, and Dartmouth College was founded in 1769. Cornell University is the newest member, established in 1865.

Student populations at these universities are relatively small compared to large state systems. Undergraduate enrollment at an Ivy League school ranges from about 4,500 to 15,000 students. Total enrollment includes both undergraduate and graduate students. At Dartmouth, the total enrollment is approximately 6,600. At Columbia, Cornell, Harvard, and Penn, the total enrollment exceeds 20,000. This size allows for a focused academic environment. These schools also attract millions of dollars in annual research funding. This money comes from both the federal government and private sources.

The Ivy League is part of a broader global pattern of elite education. Many other countries have similar groups of prestigious universities. In England, there is a famous group called Oxbridge. China has the C9 League. France has the Écoles Normales Supérieures. South Korea has the SKY Universities, and Japan has the Imperial Universities. All Ivy League members belong to the Association of American Universities. This is a prestigious alliance for the best research universities in the United States.
