Other rivers like the Danube are longer, but they flow through many different countries. The Iskar is a part of the Black Sea river basin. It is also a right tributary to the Danube. This means it flows into the Danube to join it. It is the only river that starts in southern Bulgaria and flows north through the Balkan Mountains.

The river begins in the Rila mountains. These are the highest mountains in Bulgaria. The water starts as three separate forks. One is the Cherni Iskar, which is 23 km long. The second is the Beli Iskar, which is 28 km long. The third is the small Levi Iskar. These three paths join together to form the main river.

As the water moves, it fills the Iskar Reservoir. This is the largest artificial lake in the country. The river then flows through the Sofia Valley. This valley is where the capital city, Sofia, is located.

As the river moves north, it does something amazing. It cuts a deep path through the Balkan Mountains. This path is called the Iskar Gorge. The gorge is 84 km long. In some places, the rock walls are very high. They can reach 500 m in height.

At a place called Lakatnik, the river makes a sharp turn to the east. It travels through many different types of rock. Some parts of the gorge are narrow like a canyon. Other parts have wide terraces made of old earth. Eventually, the river leaves the mountains and enters the Danubian Plain.

The Iskar is a very old river. Geologists say it is the oldest river in the Balkan Peninsula. It is also unique because it kept its original direction. This happened even when the Earth changed a lot around it.

The river flows through nine different towns and many villages. It also helps about 1,600,000 people in six provinces. These provinces include Sofia, Vratsa, Lovech, and Pleven. The river is very important for the economy. It provides water for factories and for growing food. It even helps make electrical energy for people to use.

Many living things live in and around the Iskar. There are more than 50 species of fish in the water. You might find a brown trout or a wels catfish there. Some fish, like the Cottus haemusi, live only in the upper parts of this river.
