But new guns changed everything. These guns fired explosive shells. These shells could smash wooden hulls or start fires. To stay safe, sailors needed a new kind of ship. They created the ironclad.

An ironclad had three main parts. First, it had a metal skin to stop shells. Second, it used steam power to move. Third, it carried heavy guns. Steam power was a big deal. Before steam, ships needed wind to move. Steam engines let ships move even when there was no wind.

France built the first ocean-going ironclad. It was named Gloire. It was launched in 1859. Britain soon built its own ironclads, too. One famous British ship was the HMS Warrior.

It was very fast. Ironclads changed sea battles forever. They were used in the American Civil War. In that war, ironclads fought against wooden ships. They also fought against other ironclads. This proved that metal ships were now the most powerful on the sea.
