The Russian destruction of an Ottoman squadron at the Battle of Sinop demonstrated this power. This event proved that wooden-hulled warships could no longer survive modern combat.

Iron armor was the third essential component for protection. The use of wrought iron for hulls began as early as the 1830s. The first iron-hulled gunboat was the Nemesis in 1839. Later, the 1842 steam frigate Guadalupe was built with a metal hull for the Mexican Navy.

Experiments in the mid-1800s tested how iron reacted to projectiles. Researchers found that thin iron plates backed by wood could stop shells from detonating. This discovery encouraged the move toward fully armored warships.
