She was known for doing very difficult and dangerous tricks. These included acrobatic lifts and a move called a split triple twist. She completely dominated the world of pair skating during the 1970s. Her many wins brought her great pride and fame around the world.

Skating required intense focus and a lot of hard work. In 1972, she had a scary accident during a practice lift. This caused a concussion and a head injury called an intracranial hematoma. Even after this, she skated in a competition and won a World title. Later, her music actually stopped during a program in 1973. She and her partner finished their routine in total silence. The crowd gave them a standing ovation for their amazing skill.

Irina's journey began in Moscow, Russia, where she was born in 1949. As a young child, she was often sick with pneumonia. Her doctor suggested she try more exercise and spend time outdoors. In 1954, she went to an ice rink for the first time.
