math Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Math experts work together across the globe. They belong to a group called the International Mathematical Union, or IMU. This group helps people share new math ideas.

The IMU started in 1920. It began again in 1950. Today, more than 80 countries are members. Some countries are also called Associate Members. Bangladesh and Paraguay are Associate Members.

The group helps math grow in many ways. They help people learn math in school. They also help women in math. The group gives money to help math in developing countries. This work is led by the Commission for Developing Countries.

Every four years, members meet for a big event. This is called a General Assembly. They use this time to make big plans. They also elect leaders for the group.

The IMU gives out very special prizes. These awards recognize great work in math. One famous prize is the Fields Medal. Other prizes include the Abacus Medal and the Gauss Prize. These awards are some of the highest honors in math.
