They are known for their many hits and big shows. The band has sold over 10 million albums and singles worldwide. People love them for their changing musical styles. They have played in many different countries for many years. Their music has moved from bright sounds to darker tones. This variety keeps their many fans interested in their work.

Making music for a large band involves many different parts. Nicola Sirkis provides the lead vocals and plays guitars. He also uses synthesizers and a harmonica. Other members play the bass guitar or the drums. Some musicians also play the keyboards or the saxophone. The band works together to create new songs and albums. They often collaborate with other artists to find new sounds. This teamwork helps them create many different types of music.

The band began in Paris in 1981. Two friends named Nicola Sirkis and Dominique Nicolas started the group. They soon added Dimitri Bodiansky to the lineup. Their first concert was at a café called Le Rose Bonbon. In 1982, they recorded their first album called L'Aventurier. This album was a huge success and sold 250,000 copies. It helped them become a major act in French music. They continued to grow throughout the 1980s.

Indochine has reached many different places and people. In 1984, they toured through France and Scandinavia. In Sweden, their songs were very popular on the radio. Fans in Stockholm even screamed for them like the Beatles. In 1988, they traveled to Peru for a tour. They played four shows at the Coliseo Amauta in Lima. These shows reached a total audience of over 40,000 people. They also sold 400,000 recordings in Peru during that time.

Even though they are successful, the band has faced hard times. In 1989, Dimitri Bodiansky left the group. He felt the band's sound was changing too much. In 1999, guitarist Stéphane Sirkis died from hepatitis at age 39. He was the twin brother of Nicola Sirkis. He asked the band to keep playing after he passed away. The band honored him by continuing their career. They later had a big comeback with the album Paradize in 2002.
