Impeachment is a way to hold powerful leaders accountable. It is a legal process used by a group of lawmakers. This group can bring charges against a public official for misconduct. Misconduct means doing something wrong or breaking the rules of their office.

This process is usually for people in very high positions. It is often used for ministers or heads of state. It helps ensure that even the most powerful people follow the law.

The way impeachment works can change depending on the country. In many places, a group of people starts the charges first. This is often called the impeachment stage. After that, a trial is usually required to remove the person.

Some countries use a court to help with this work. Others use a special group of lawmakers to act as judges. The main goal is often to quickly vacate the office. This means the leader must leave their position right away.

People have used similar rules for a very long time. The word likely comes from an old French word. It meant to catch or ensnare someone by the foot. In the 1300s, the English "Good Parliament" used it against a man named William Latimer.

In West Africa, the Ashanti Empire had its own way. If a ruler broke an oath, Kingmakers would remove them. They would take away the leader's sandals and their Golden Stool.

Many different leaders have faced this process in history. From 1990 to 2020, there were 272 impeachment charges. These charges were against 132 different heads of state in 63 countries.

In Brazil, the rules are very specific and strict. For example, the president Dilma Rousseff was removed in 2016. She faced charges about how she managed the country's budget. In South Korea, a group called the Sahundae oversaw officials starting in 983 AD.

Impeachment is different from other ways a leader might leave. In some countries, a group can use a "motion of no confidence." This is a different way to remove a government.

Impeachment is usually reserved for very serious problems. It is used when someone commits a serious abuse of their power. Because it is a big deal, it often requires a supermajority. This means more than half of the group must agree. This helps make sure the decision is fair and serious.
