He served as a chancellor for King Djoser during the 3rd Dynasty. A chancellor is a high-ranking official who helps a leader rule. Some records suggest he might have been a close friend of the king. He may have even been a twin brother to the Pharaoh. This is because of a unique title he held in history. His title was bity sensen, which means "the King of Lower Egypt, the two brothers."

Many people believe Imhotep was a great builder. He is often credited with designing the Step Pyramid at Saqqara.

This was a huge building made of stone. Before this, kings were usually buried in tombs called mastabas. Imhotep may have also used the first stone columns to support buildings. While later stories give him this credit, the Egyptians of his time did not. We know he was a real person because of two old inscriptions. One inscription was found on a statue of King Djoser. Another was found on a wall near King Sekhemkhet's unfinished pyramid.

After he died, the way people saw Imhotep changed slowly. Over 3,000 years, he was honored as a god.

He became known as a demigod, which is a being that is part human and part god. He was even linked to the god Thoth. Thoth was the god of math, writing, and architecture. Imhotep's following grew so large that his worship center was in Memphis. People made offerings to statues of him for many centuries. This shows how much respect people had for his memory.

Imhotep became famous as a god of healing and medicine.

Some stories say he could end a famine, which is a time when there is no food. One legend says he helped King Djoser end a seven-year drought. Even the Greeks respected him. They linked him to their own health god named Asklepios. Some writings even suggest he gave the first written diagnosis of cancer. However, the treatment he suggested was simply that there was no cure. This shows how much medicine has changed over time.

Many legends were told about his life and family. One story says his father was the god Ptah. Another story says his mother was a woman named Khereduankh.

In some tales, he even fought a sorceress using magic. These stories helped keep his name alive for thousands of years. Even though he is a figure from long ago, he is still famous today. You might even hear his name in modern movies. We still do not know exactly where his tomb is hidden. He remains one of the most interesting people from ancient Egypt.
