The city is situated on the Okgu and Keumman Plains. These flat lands lead toward the West Sea, also known as the Yellow Sea. The geography of Iksan is defined by both mountains and rivers. To the east, the landscape rises into the rugged mountains of Mt. Cheonho and Mt. Mireuk. These peaks sit at the edge of the Noryeong Mountains. To the northwest, the Mt. Hamra range leads to a series of hills. A great stream flows through this area to form the fertile Okgu plain to the west. In the north, the Keum-gang river divides the city. To the south, the Mankyeong-gang river separates Iksan from the Kimje Plains.

Iksan is most famous for being a major railway junction. This means many different train lines meet here to connect travelers. The junction includes the Jeolla Line, the Janghang Line, the Honam Line, and the Honam HSR. The HSR is a high-speed rail system. Because of this network, the city provides frequent service to many large cities. Travelers can reach Seoul, Daejeon, Gwangju, Mokpo, Jeonju, Suncheon, and Yeosu. The city also uses KTX and Saemaul trains. Additionally, the Iksan Bus Terminal provides daily service to most cities in South Korea, including express buses to Ansan and Incheon.

The history of Iksan reaches back to the ancient Baekje Kingdom. During that era, Iksan served as the kingdom's capital. You can still see temples from that period standing today. The city has undergone many changes over the centuries. The city center and the railway junction were formerly known as Iri. In 1995, Iri merged with Iksan County to form the modern city. Iksan also faced a period of decline following an explosion at the Iri train station in 1977. However, the station was eventually rebuilt. Today, Iksan has returned to being a thriving city.
