Jeonju is the capital and largest city of the Jeonbuk state in South Korea. It serves as a major urban center with a strong connection to its rural surroundings. The geography of Jeonju is defined by its location in a basin. High mountains surround the city on multiple sides. Moryongsan mountain sits to the north of the urban area. Namgosan mountain is located to the south. A major ecological axis runs through the center of the city. This is the Jeonjucheon River, which provides a natural path for water and wildlife. The city is divided into two main administrative wards. These are the Deokjin District and the Wansan District. Together, they contain approximately 40 different neighborhoods.

Jeonju experiences a humid subtropical climate, known as Cwa in the Köppen classification system. The city has four distinct seasons: spring, summer, fall, and winter. During the summer, humidity from Southeast Asia reaches the Korean peninsula from June through September. Winter days can range from cool to quite cold. These cold spells are often caused by a high pressure front. This front brings freezing air down from Siberia. In the spring and fall, the weather is often mild. Temperatures in these seasons frequently reach the mid-20s°C with low humidity.

The history of Jeonju spans over 1,300 years. It likely began as a market town within the Baekje kingdom around 57 BC. The Silla kingdom conquered the area in 660 AD. By 685 AD, Jeonju became one of nine provincial capitals for Silla. In 892 or 900 AD, a leader named Gyeon Hwon renamed the city Wansan. He established it as the capital of the Later Baekje kingdom. Later, the Goryeo kingdom took control, and the city enjoyed economic growth. The Joseon dynasty began in 1392 and claimed Jeonju as their ancestral home. In 1413, the city was trusted to safeguard copies of the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty.

In the 20th century, Jeonju underwent many changes. The city was occupied by the Japanese from 1910 to 1945. During this time, it was renamed Zenshū. The Japanese authorities destroyed the ancient city walls. Today, the Pungnammun gate is the only remnant of those old walls. The population grew to 100,000 inhabitants between 1925 and 1949. Jeonju was not on the immediate frontline during the Korean War. However, it still suffered from bombardment by 1953. The city received its modern boundaries and government system in 1963.

Jeonju is internationally recognized for its culinary traditions. In May 2012, UNESCO named it a Creative City for Gastronomy. This honor celebrates thousands of years of traditional home cooking. The city supports active food research and nurtures talented chefs. Many famous dishes come from this region. Jeonju bibimbap is a very popular rice dish across South Korea. Another local favorite is kongnamul gukbap, a rice soup with bean sprouts eaten in winter. Other foods include yukjeon, which is a meat pancake, and memil naengmyeon.

The city also hosts the Jeonju International Film Festival. This event draws about 50,000 visitors every year. The Jeonju International Sori Festival is also a highly regarded event. Many famous films, such as Parasite, have used the city as a filming location. Sports are also important to the community.
