By 685 AD, Jeonju became one of nine provincial capitals for Silla. In 892 or 900 AD, a leader named Gyeon Hwon renamed the city Wansan. He established it as the capital of the Later Baekje kingdom. Later, the Goryeo kingdom took control, and the city enjoyed economic growth. The Joseon dynasty began in 1392 and claimed Jeonju as their ancestral home. In 1413, the city was trusted to safeguard copies of the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty.

In the 20th century, Jeonju underwent many changes. The city was occupied by the Japanese from 1910 to 1945. During this time, it was renamed Zenshū. The Japanese authorities destroyed the ancient city walls. Today, the Pungnammun gate is the only remnant of those old walls. The population grew to 100,000 inhabitants between 1925 and 1949. Jeonju was not on the immediate frontline during the Korean War. However, it still suffered from bombardment by 1953. The city received its modern boundaries and government system in 1963.
