Ieremia Tabai was a very important leader for the nation of Kiribati. He was born on December 16, 1949, in a place called Nonouti.

As a young boy, he moved to Tarawa to attend high school. Later, he went to New Zealand to continue his studies. Life in a new country was not always easy for him. He was far away from his family and had less money than other students. However, these hard times taught him how to be careful with money. He eventually earned a degree in commerce and administration in 1972.

After college, Tabai returned home to the Gilbert Islands in 1973. He found a job working in the Ministry of Finance for one year. Soon, he decided to enter the world of politics. In 1974, he was elected to represent Nonouti in the House of Assembly. By 1975, he had become the leader of the opposition.

He ran as part of the Democratic Labour Party. Tabai was known for being a simple man who stayed close to the people. He often rode the bus or a bicycle to get around. He even climbed coconut trees to get milk for himself. This helped people see him as a leader who understood their lives.

In 1978, Tabai won a big election to become the chief minister. This was a role under the colonial government. He was only 27 years old when he took this job.

As chief minister, he traveled to London and Washington D.C. to talk about the future. He worked hard to negotiate how Kiribati would become its own nation. He wanted to make sure the country stayed together as one land. On July 12, 1979, Kiribati finally became an independent nation. At that moment, Tabai’s title changed from chief minister to the first president of Kiribati.

Being the first president was a very big job for Tabai. He wanted his country to be self-sufficient, which means providing for itself.

He focused on making the nation strong without relying too much on other countries. In 1985, he signed a fishing agreement with the Soviet Union. This decision caused many people to protest both at home and in other lands. Even with these challenges, Tabai won another election in 1982. He won with 48.7% of the vote. He served as president until 1991, when he had to step down because of term limits. This rule means a leader can only serve for a certain amount of time.

Tabai continued to help his country in many different ways after his presidency. In 1992, he served as the Secretary General of the Pacific Islands Forum until 1998. He also helped start new ways for people to get news. He founded the Newstar newspaper, which was the first one owned by local people. He also helped start a radio station for the islands.

Even much later, he returned to the House of Assembly to represent Nonouti. Today, he still speaks up about important things like protecting the islands from climate change.
