Hammer DeRoburt was a very important leader for the island of Nauru. He was born on Nauru on September 25, 1922. He grew up in the Boe District and belonged to the Iruwa tribe. His family had deep roots on the island. His mother was named Eidumunang. His grandfather, Daimon, was the head chief from 1920 to 1930.

DeRoburt spent his early years learning and working. He went to school on Nauru first. Later, he studied at the Gordon Institute of Technology in Geelong, Australia. When he came home, he worked as a teacher. He also worked for the Department of Education after World War II. During that war, the Japanese occupied Nauru. They deported DeRoburt and many other Nauruans to a place called Truk. He finally returned to his home in 1946.

He soon began to fight for the rights of his people. In 1951, he tried to join the Nauru Local Government Council. He was disqualified that time because of nomination errors. However, he did not give up on his goals. In 1953, he led a strike that lasted four months. This strike helped workers get better pay and more training. In 1955, he was finally elected to the Council. By 1956, the Council chose him to be the Head Chief of Nauru.

DeRoburt worked hard to make Nauru a free and sovereign nation. He spoke to the United Nations to ask for independence. The Australian government suggested moving Nauruans to Curtis Island in Queensland. DeRoburt and his group rejected this idea. They wanted to stay on Nauru and govern themselves. He was a key part of the Nauru Talks from 1965 to 1967. These talks helped Nauru become independent on January 31, 1968.

After independence, DeRoburt became the first president of Nauru. He served many terms in office between 1968 and 1989. He also ran the departments for foreign affairs and industry. He helped start Air Nauru and the Nauru Pacific Shipping Lines. Later, he took a case to the International Court of Justice. He wanted to fix the land that had been mined for phosphate. DeRoburt died in Melbourne on July 15, 1992. He is remembered for helping his country stand on its own.
