He served as the Prime Minister from 1957 until 1968. After that, he became the first President of the Second Republic. He held this role until he retired in 1978. Nasir was born on September 2, 1926, in Fuvahmulah. His family came from royal houses in the Maldives. He studied in Malé and also in Sri Lanka. These studies helped him climb the political ladder quickly.

Nasir worked hard to make the Maldives an independent nation. He wanted to end the control of the British Empire. On July 26, 1965, he signed the independence agreement.

He also helped the country join the United Nations. This happened on September 21, 1965. The Maldives was the first small nation to join. This gave the islands a voice on the world stage. He even saw the flag raised at the UN headquarters.

He also changed how people lived and worked in the Maldives. Nasir started the tourism industry to help the economy grow. He believed visitors would bring much-needed money to the islands. In 1972, the first resort called Kurumba Island Resort opened. Nasir even helped start the Bandos Island Resort himself. He also created the first tourist agency in the country. These steps helped tourism become the most important industry today.

Many new things arrived in the Maldives during his time. He brought radio and television to the people. He also built the first airport at Hulhulé. Nasir helped start better schools with English lessons. In 1964, he allowed women to vote in the country. He even opened health centers in all the atolls.

These changes helped the country become more modern and connected.

However, some parts of his leadership were very difficult. In the 1960s, there was a big conflict in Thinadhoo. This happened during a movement to separate from the government. The government used force to stop the movement. This led to many people losing their homes and lives. It is remembered as a very dark time in history. Nasir retired after two terms as President. He left the country with no debt to other nations.
