Ieremia Tabai was a leader from Kiribati. He was born in Nonouti in 1949. He went to school in New Zealand. Life there was hard for him. He was far from his family. He learned to be careful with money. This helped him become a leader.

Tabai worked in a finance office first. Then he entered politics. In 1978, he became the chief minister. This was a role under the old colonial rule. In 1979, Kiribati became an independent nation. Tabai became its very first president. He wanted his country to be self-sufficient. This means he wanted the islands to provide for themselves.

Tabai was a very simple man. He often rode a bus or a bike. He even climbed coconut trees for milk. He did not want to rely on big tourism. He thought the islands should wait many years for that. In 1982, he won another election. He lost power in 1991 due to term limits. He later helped start a newspaper and a radio station. He still cares about his home today.
