He was born on Pentecost Island in 1942. Lini was an Anglican priest. He also worked in politics.

At that time, the United Kingdom and France ruled the islands. People called the islands the New Hebrides. Lini wanted his home to be free. He helped start a group called the New Hebrides National Party. He even helped make a newspaper.

In 1980, Vanuatu became its own nation. Lini became the first Prime Minister. He led the country for many years. He believed in Melanesian socialism. This was a way to help his people. He thought Western markets could cause poverty.

Lini also spoke up for others. He did not want nuclear tests in his region. He supported people fighting for freedom in other places. Even after a stroke in 1987, he stayed active in politics. He died in 1999. His sister and brother were also leaders in his country. [CAPTION: Lini at a meeting in 1983.]
