The ichthys is a well-known symbol used by Christians today.

It is made of two arcs that cross each other. This shape looks like the profile of a fish. The name comes from the ancient Greek word for fish. For many, this simple shape holds a very deep meaning. It is often called the "Jesus fish" in modern times.

People use it to show their faith to others.

The symbol works as a special kind of code. In Greek, the letters of the word "ichthys" form an acronym. This means the first letter of each word creates the name. These letters stand for "Jesus Christ, God's Son, Savior."

Some people also see the symbol as a link to holy acts. It can represent baptism, which involves water. It also connects to the Eucharist, or Holy Communion. Some thinkers even saw the symbol as a loaf of bread.

History shows that this symbol has been around for a very long time. The first appearances in art and writing date to the 2nd century. By the late 2nd century, it was very popular among followers. It spread even more during the 3rd and 4th centuries. Some early writers, like Clement of Alexandria, suggested using it. Others, like the Church Father Augustine, wrote about its meaning.

It was even found in the Catacombs of Saint Sebastian.

Many stories in the Gospels connect Jesus to fish. Several of his twelve Apostles were fishermen by trade. In one story, Jesus fed five thousand people with five loaves and two fish. In another, his disciples caught 153 fish after following his advice. Jesus even told Peter he would find a coin in a fish's mouth.

These stories help explain why the fish is so sacred. The fish is a key part of Christian history and teaching.

Today, the ichthys is a common sight in our daily lives. You might see it as a sticker on the back of a car.

Many people wear it as a necklace or a pendant. Some Christians use it to share their beliefs with the world. It is also used in music, like the Ichthus Music Festival in Kentucky. This festival started in 1970 and is the oldest of its kind in the United States. The symbol remains a strong sign of faith.
