Alpha and Omega are two very important Greek letters.

Alpha is the very first letter of the Greek alphabet. Omega is the final letter of that same alphabet. Because they represent the start and the finish, they carry a deep meaning. Many people use them to talk about things that are complete. They can stand for the whole range of something. This makes them a powerful way to show a beginning and an end.

In the Christian faith, these letters are used as a special title. This title comes from the Book of Revelation in the New Testament. In this book, Jesus says, "I am the Alpha and the Omega." He also explains this by saying he is the beginning and the end.

Many Christians believe this means that God or Jesus is eternal. This means they believe God has always existed and will always exist. It shows that God covers everything from the very start to the very end.

History shows us that these letters have been used for a long time. The phrase appears in many old manuscripts of the New Testament. Some very old books, like the Alexandrine or Sinaitic manuscripts, do not include the phrase in every spot. Because of this, some modern translations of the Bible leave it out of certain verses.

Scholars like Robert Young have studied these old writings closely. The letters are Greek because the New Testament was originally written in the Greek language.

People often use these letters as a visual symbol in art. You can find them in the ancient Roman catacombs. In early Christian art, the letters might hang from the arms of a cross. Sometimes they are called pendilia when they hang from jeweled crosses.

You might also see them near the head of Christ. Sometimes they are even placed inside a halo, which is a ring of light. Even though they are Greek, they became very common in Western Christian art.

Other religions have similar ways of describing God using letters. In Judaism, the Hebrew word for truth is called the "Seal of God." This word uses the first, middle, and last letters of the Hebrew alphabet.

Islam also has a similar idea in the Qur'an. The Qur'an uses two names for God that mean "The First" and "The Last." These different traditions all use the idea of first and last to show something great.
