Alpha and Omega are two special Greek letters.

Alpha is the first letter of the Greek alphabet. Omega is the very last letter.

Many Christians use these letters as a symbol. They find this phrase in the Book of Revelation. In that book, Jesus says, "I am the Alpha and the Omega." This means he is the beginning and the end. Many people believe this shows that God is eternal. This means God has always existed.

Some people think the title refers to God the Father. Others believe it refers to Jesus Christ. Some think it refers to both.

These letters appear in old Christian art. You might see them in Roman catacombs. They are sometimes shown near a cross. In some art, they hang from the arms of a cross. They can even be placed inside a halo. This is a bright ring of light around a head.

Other faiths use similar ideas. In Islam, the Qur'an uses names that mean "The First" and "The Last." In Judaism, a Hebrew word for truth uses the first, middle, and last letters of the alphabet.
