A trident is a special kind of tool with three prongs. It looks a lot like a large, sharp fork.

People use this tool for spear fishing to catch large fish. The three points make it easier to hit a target in the water. They also make it much harder for a fish to wiggle free once struck. This design works well because it does not lose too much force. It stays strong enough to pierce through, even with three points.

In many old stories, powerful sea gods carry a trident. The Greek god Poseidon is often shown with one. Some legends say the cyclopes forged his divine weapon. People once believed he could cause earthquakes by striking the earth. In Roman myths, the god Neptune used his trident to create the first warhorse. Other sea beings, like Tritons or mermen, are also shown holding them in art.

Different cultures have their own names for this three-pronged shape. The word trident comes from Latin words meaning "three teeth." In Sanskrit, the name is trishula, which means "triple-spear." This name uses the word for "thorn" instead of "teeth." The Greek name is triaina, which means "threefold." These names all point to the same three-part shape.

Because it looks so strong, many groups use the trident as a symbol. The flag of Barbados features a trident prominently.

Even the United States Navy SEALs use a trident in their insignia. This symbol represents their work on the sea, in the air, and on land. The trident shows great power and authority in many places.

You might see the trident shape in many parts of your daily life. It is used in the logo for the Maserati car company. Some sports teams, like Arizona State University, use it for their mascots. You can even find it in nature. Some plants, like the Douglas-fir, have parts called bracts that look like a trident. Even the symbol for the planet Neptune uses the trident shape.
