The ichthys is a significant symbol used by Christians to express their faith.

The name comes from the ancient Greek word for fish, which is spelled ΩΧΘΥΣ. In its modern form, the symbol consists of two intersecting arcs. The right ends of these arcs extend beyond the meeting point. This specific design creates the profile of a fish. Today, many people colloquially refer to this icon as the "Jesus fish." It serves as a visible sign of religious identity for many believers.

The symbol functions as a complex acronym or acrostic. In the Greek language, the letters of the word ΩΧΘΥ represent the first letters of a specific phrase. This phrase translates to "Jesus Christ, God's Son, Savior."

Because of this, the fish shape acts as a shorthand for a core statement of belief. Beyond this linguistic meaning, the symbol carries deep theological connections. It is often linked to the sacrament of baptism. Early Christian writer Tertullian noted that just as water sustains fish, believers are born in water. It also relates to the Holy Eucharist, or Communion. This connection is tied to the biblical miracle where Jesus multiplied loaves and fish to feed a crowd.

There are different ways to interpret the visual forms of the ichthys. The most common version is the simple fish outline. However, a 4th-century adaptation exists that is more complex. This version superimposes the Greek letters on top of one another. This process creates a shape that resembles an eight-spoked wheel. While many scholars interpret this as a wheel, others suggest it represents a loaf of bread.

These variations show how the symbol evolved to include different layers of meaning over time.

The history of the ichthys spans nearly two millennia. The first appearances of the symbol in Christian art and literature date to the 2nd century. By the late 2nd century, its use among Christians had become quite popular. The symbol then spread widely throughout the 3rd and 4th centuries. Some historians have debated how it was used during times of Roman persecution. It was once suggested that Christians used the fish as a secret symbol to identify one another. This idea was popularized by the 1951 movie *Quo Vadis*. However, many modern scholars now believe this "secret symbol" theory is less likely. They point out that early sources link the fish more to sacraments than to hiding from authorities.

Archaeological evidence provides concrete links to the early church. The symbol has been found in several important locations. For example, it appears in the Catacombs of Saint Sebastian and the Catacomb of Priscilla.

Stone inscriptions in these catacombs are marked with the Greek word for fish. Other historical texts, such as the Latin *Oracula Sibillina* from the 1st or 2nd century, also mention the symbol. These findings help researchers trace the long-standing presence of the ichthys in early Christian culture.

The connection between Christianity and fish is rooted in several Gospel stories. Many of Jesus' twelve Apostles were professional fishermen. In the Gospel of Mark, Jesus tells them he will make them "fishers of men." Other stories include the feeding of the five thousand, where Jesus used five loaves and two fish. In the Gospel of John, the disciples catch exactly 153 fish after following Jesus' instructions.

Another story in Matthew describes Peter finding a coin inside the mouth of a fish. Even the "Sign of Jonah" uses fish imagery to symbolize the resurrection of Jesus.

In modern popular culture, the ichthys has seen a significant resurgence. During the 1970s, the "Jesus Fish" became a popular icon for believers. It was even brought to the Aquarius Rock Festival in Australia in 1973. Today, the symbol is frequently seen on vehicles as a decal or emblem.

It is also commonly used in jewelry, such as necklaces and pendants. Some believers choose car stickers because they are visible to everyone on the outside. The symbol also appears in organized events, such as the Ichthus Music Festival. This annual event in Wilmore, Kentucky, began in 1970. It holds the distinction of being the oldest Christian music festival in the United States.
