Hydrangeas are beautiful plants with many different types.

Most grow as big shrubs. Some can even be small trees. They grow in many places, like Asia and the Americas.

These plants have special flowerheads. Some look like round pom-poms. People call these mopheads. Other flowers look flat like lace. We call these lacecaps. A flowerhead usually has two kinds of flowers. There are small flowers in the middle. There are also large, colorful flowers on the outside.

One of the coolest things is how they change color.

The color depends on the soil's pH. The pH is a way to measure how acidic or alkaline the soil is. If the soil is acidic, the flowers turn blue. If the soil is alkaline, the flowers turn pink. If the pH is in the middle, they can look purple. This happens because of aluminum in the soil. White hydrangeas do not change color. They do not make the pigment, which is the stuff that gives flowers color.
