An hourglass is a special tool used to measure time.

It consists of two glass bulbs connected by a narrow neck. Gravity pulls a substance from the top bulb into the bottom one. This flow is very steady and regulated. This makes it a great way to track specific amounts of time.

The time it takes to empty depends on a few things. The amount of material inside matters a lot. The size of the grains also changes the speed. Finally, the width of the neck determines how fast things fall.

How an hourglass works is quite clever. The material inside can be many different things. Some people used real silica sand. Others used powdered marble or even burnt eggshells.

To get a perfect flow, the size of the grains must be right. The grains should be between 1/12 and 1/2 the width of the neck. In early designs, the two bulbs were separate. They were joined by a cord and coated in wax. By 1760, makers began blowing both bulbs together. This helped keep moisture out and kept the pressure steady.

History shows that hourglasses have been used for a long time. We do not know exactly when they started. Water clocks were used in Babylon and Egypt very early on. The first written record of an hourglass in Europe is from 1338. This was seen in a fresco by Ambrogio Lorenzetti.

Marine sandglasses became very popular on ships during the 14th century. A clerk named Thomas de Stetesham recorded them in 1345. These were much better for sailors than water clocks. They did not freeze in the cold or tilt on moving boats.

People used these tools for many different jobs. Sailors used them to help measure ship speed in knots.

On land, they were used in churches to time sermons. They also helped people time cooking or work breaks. Some people even used a set of four glasses at once. This allowed them to measure quarters, halves, or full hours. Later, mechanical clocks became cheaper and more accurate. This meant the hourglass was used less for daily tasks. However, they remained popular because of their beautiful design.

Today, the hourglass is often used as a symbol. It represents the idea that time is passing quickly.

You might see it on old tombstones or pirate flags. In computer programs, an hourglass icon shows a task is running.

Some people even use it to represent the climate crisis. This symbol shows that time is running out for the Earth. It is a shape that people recognize all over the world.
