They might have come from a group called Homo erectus. Some thinkers believe they might come from an even earlier group. This sea crossing was a huge task. It required traveling several miles of open water. We see evidence of human activity on the island from 771,000 to 631,000 years ago.
Finding these bones was a long process. A scientist named Philip Piper found the first bone in 2007. He was sorting through animal bones from an excavation. That excavation was led by Armand Mijares in Callao Cave. In 2010, Mijares and a team of experts identified them as modern humans. Later, they found 12 more specimens. These new finds showed a mix of old and new traits. Because of this, they named them a new species in 2019. The name comes from the name of the island.
The bones show many interesting shapes. The teeth are small and narrow. The molars are smaller than those of other species. Some teeth look like very old types of humans. The finger bones are long, narrow, and curved. This shape is seen in very old species like Australopithecus. The foot bones are also very unique. They look different from other known human fossils. Scientists still study these bones to learn more about how they moved. 
We can learn about their lives from the things they left behind. Most bone fragments in the cave belong to Philippine deer. This suggests they brought deer carcasses into the cave to eat. We even found cut marks on a deer bone. This shows they used tools for butchering meat. They may have used tools made of plants instead of stone. Other sites near Rizal show early humans butchered a rhino. They also lived near animals like the warty pig and turtles. These clues help us picture their daily lives.
Homo luzonensis is an extinct species of archaic human. They lived during the Late Pleistocene period on the island of Luzon in the Philippines. Local people sometimes call them "Ubag," named after a mythical caveman. Scientists believe they may have been a pygmy species. This means they were likely much smaller than modern humans. 
Researchers found the remains in Callao Cave in northern Luzon. The fossils include teeth and phalanges, which are finger and toe bones. The first bone was found in 2007 by zooarchaeologist Philip Piper. He was sorting through animal bones from an excavation led by Armand Mijares. In 2010, a team of international and local archaeologists identified the bones as modern humans. However, they found 12 more specimens later. These new finds showed a mix of primitive and modern traits. Because of this, they named a new species in 2019.
The anatomy of Homo luzonensis is very unique. Their teeth are small and mesiodistally shortened, meaning they are narrow from side to side. Their molars are smaller than those of the similar species Homo floresiensis. The premolars are oddly large compared to the molars. This proportion is more similar to the genus Paranthropus than to other Homo species. Their finger bones are long, narrow, and curved. This shape is a trait seen in the much older Australopithecus. Even their foot bones are morphologically unique among the Homo genus.
Scientists are still studying how these humans moved. The curved finger bones might suggest they could climb trees. However, the fossil record is very fragmentary, which makes it hard to be certain. The foot bones are also different from species like Australopithecus africanus. Because the bones are so incomplete, it is difficult to estimate their exact height. Some researchers suggest they might have been similar in size to modern Philippine Negritos. They might have experienced insular dwarfism, where island animals shrink over time.
How did these humans reach Luzon? The island has always been separated from larger landmasses. Their ancestors would have had to cross the Huxley Line in the ocean. This required a sea crossing of several miles at minimum. They may have descended from Asian Homo erectus. It is also possible they came from an even earlier Homo species. Evidence shows hominin presence on Luzon as early as 771,000 to 631,000 years ago. 
We can learn about their culture from the bones left in the cave. About 90% of the bone fragments in Callao Cave belong to Philippine deer. This suggests the inhabitants dragged deer carcasses into the cave. There are cut marks on a deer tibia, which shows they used tools for butchering. While no stone tools were found in the cave, they might have used organic materials. Or, they may have processed meat away from the cave. 
Recent studies have changed our understanding of their age. Initially, the bones were thought to be from a more recent time. However, a 2023 study found the remains are 134,000 ± 14,000 years old. This makes them much older than scientists first believed. This discovery helps us piece together the complex story of human evolution in Southeast Asia. It shows that many different types of humans lived at the same time in different places.
