Other scientists used different methods to check the age. Some thought the fossils were only 0.6 million years old. However, many experts now believe the 1.7 million year date is correct. This helps us place them in the Lower Pleistocene time.

Other scientists used different methods, such as measuring protein ratios in bones, which gave much younger dates. However, most experts now agree that the 1.7 million-year date is the most accurate. 
The discovery of these fossils happened in stages through careful fieldwork. On May 1, 1965, a geologist named Qian Fang found the two incisors. He found them in fossiliferous deposits near Shangnabang village. His team was funded by the Chinese Academy of Geosciences. Later, in December 1984, a team from the Beijing Natural History Museum found the tibia. They found it at the Guojiabao site, which is near the original discovery location. This tibia was eventually described in 1991. 
Yuanmou Man possessed impressive technology for their time. They manufactured various stone tools using materials like quartz and quartzite. These rocks were likely gathered from nearby rivers. They created simple cores, flakes, choppers, pointed tools, and scrapers. To make these, they used a method called direct hammering. This involves using a hammerstone to flake off pieces of the rock. They also used a bipolar technique, which involves smashing a core with a hammerstone. These tools are very similar to the Oldowan technology used by humans in Africa at the same time. 
The study of Yuanmou Man connects to the larger story of human migration. They were part of a major expansion of Homo erectus across Asia. This species lived in many places, from northern China down to Java. Some scientists believe that different groups of humans moved into East Asia at different times. For example, dental comparisons suggest that the people in Java may have arrived through a different dispersal event than the Peking Man. Yuanmou Man helps researchers test these theories about how our ancestors moved across the world.
