Yuanmou Man

life science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Yuanmou Man was a type of early human. They lived in the Yuanmou Basin in China. This place is in the Yunnan Province. These people lived a very long time ago. Most scientists think they lived about 1.7 million years ago. They are some of the oldest human fossils found in China. Finding them helps us see how early humans moved across Asia.

These early humans lived in a changing world. Their home had many different parts. There were open grasslands and thick bushlands. They also lived near marshlands and forests. These forests had many pine and alder trees. They shared this land with many animals. They lived near deer, pigs, and rhinoceros. They even lived near a huge elephant called Stegodon.

We know about them because of fossils found in the ground. In 1965, a geologist named Qian Fang found two large teeth. These teeth belonged to a young male. Later, in 1984, a team found a leg bone. This bone is called a tibia. It belonged to a young female. She may have stood about 1.1 meters tall.

Scientists have worked hard to find the right age for these fossils. It is a hard job because the rocks have moved. In 1976, researchers used the Earth's magnetic field to find a date. Other scientists used different methods to check the age. Some thought the fossils were only 0.6 million years old. However, many experts now believe the 1.7 million year date is correct. This helps us place them in the Lower Pleistocene time.

Even though they lived long ago, they were very skilled. Yuanmou Man made many stone tools. They used rocks like quartz and quartzite from nearby rivers. They used a hammerstone to hit the rocks. This made sharp flakes, choppers, and scrapers. They used a way called direct hammering to shape them. They also used a bipolar technique by smashing the rock. These tools are very similar to tools used by humans in Africa.
