In many Christian traditions, certain leaders hold special roles called holy orders.

These roles are usually divided into three main types: deacons, priests, and bishops. A deacon often serves as a helper during services. A priest, sometimes called a presbyter, leads the religious ceremonies. A bishop is a high-ranking leader who oversees others.

Many churches see these roles as a sacrament. A sacrament is a sacred rite or a holy gift. However, different groups have different views on this. For example, Baptists do not view ministry as a sacrament. They do not use the term "holy orders" in the same way.

To become a leader, a person must go through a special ceremony.

This is often done through the laying on of hands. This means a leader places their hands on the person being ordained. In the Eastern Orthodox Church, this is called cheirotonia. This act is seen as a sacred mystery. It is believed to create a link back to the apostles. The apostles were the original followers of Jesus. This process helps the new leader join a long history of faith.

History plays a big part in how these orders work. The word "order" comes from the Latin word "ordo." In the past, this word described an organized group with a hierarchy. The term "holy" refers to the church itself. This means these people are set apart for work in the church. Some churches believe in apostolic succession. This is the idea that bishops have a direct line to the apostles.

This connection is very important to Anglican and many Lutheran churches. It helps them feel connected to the very beginning of their faith.

Different churches follow very specific rules for these ceremonies.

In the Anglican tradition, only a bishop can ordain new people. To ordain a new bishop, three bishops are usually needed. However, only one bishop is required to ordain a priest or a deacon. In the Eastern Orthodox Church, a bishop is seen as a vessel of grace. The ceremony for a bishop is very long and detailed. It happens near the start of the divine liturgy. The candidate must also promise to follow the rules of the church.

These roles connect to how people live their lives every day.

Martin Luther taught that everyone has a special task from God. He used the word "vocation" to describe these life tasks. This means even people in regular jobs are doing important work. In the Catholic Church, there is a difference between the ministerial priesthood and the priesthood of all baptized people. While some leaders have special jobs, others serve in different ways. Whether as a bishop or a citizen, everyone has a part to play in their community.
